Revisiting Heterogeneity and Dependence in Panel Data Modeling

چکیده

The primary objective of the paper is to revisit the statistical foundations of panel data modeling with a view to render their probabilistic assumptions testable vis-a-vis the data. This involves (a) recasting the error assumptions in terms of the probabilistic structure of the observable processes underlying the data, (b) specifying panel data models in terms of a complete and internally consistent set of testable probabilistic assumptions, and (c) proposing general misspecification testing procedures for evaluating the validity of the model assumptions. An important dimension of this recasting, is to put forward pertinent interpretations for the individual-specific fixed and random effects are proposed, by relating such effects to the probabilistic structure of the observable process underlying the data. The suggested interpretations call into question the Munlak (1978) reformulation of the random effects model, as well as the conventional wisdom on the fixed vs. random effects issue.

Accounting for Nonlinearity, Asymmetry, Heterogeneity, and Cross-Sectional Dependence in Energy Modeling: US State-Level Panel Analysis

This paper provides an example of several modeling and econometric advances used in the panel estimation of energy demand elasticities. The paper models the demand of total, industrial, and transport energy consumption and residential and commercial electricity consumption by analyzing US state-based panel data. The paper employs recently developed dynamic panel methods that address heterogenei...

A dynamic analysis of motorcycle ownership and usage: a panel data modeling approach.

This study aims to develop motorcycle ownership and usage models with consideration of the state dependence and heterogeneity effects based on a large-scale questionnaire panel survey on vehicle owners. To account for the independence among alternatives and heterogeneity among individuals, the modeling structure of motorcycle ownership adopts disaggregate choice models considering the multinomi...

Analyzing Spatial Panel Data of Cigarette Demand: A Bayesian Hierarchical Modeling Approach

Analysis of spatial panel data is of great importance and interest in spatial econometrics. Here we consider cigarette demand in a spatial panel of 46 states of the US over a 30-year period. We construct a demand equation to examine the elasticity of per pack cigarette price and per capita disposable income. The existing spatial panel models account for both spatial autocorrelation and state-wi...

Heterogeneity and State Dependence in Household Car Ownership: A Panel Analysis Using Ordered-Response Probit Models with Error Components

Dynamic, disaggregate choice models which use longitudinal data axe known to have clear advantages over cross-sectional models, but they also have their own unique estimation problems. The correlation among unobserved error components ("heterogeneity") that is likely to exist in such data sets can be the source of apparent state dependence, but true state dependence is also possible. A review o...
